A 1966 Mustang Vintage Burgundy Finds Its Perfect Match
Every Mustang carries more than horsepower and steel. It carries chapters. In 2017, Kelly, this 1966 Mustang, turned the page — leaving Sébastien’s garage to begin a new story with Sophie.
One year later, in 2018, I met her to understand what this Mustang — known to readers as Kelly — truly meant to its new owner.
A Lifelong Love for Classic Cars
Sophie’s passion for vintage vehicles didn’t start with the Mustang.
It started much earlier — somewhere between the 1950s and the 1960s.
Classic cars have always been part of her life. Over the years, she and her husband have owned more than forty vehicles: a Mini, a 1975 Toyota Corolla Coupé Sport, a Citroën 2CV, a BMW 2000 NK from 1969, a Peugeot 203 from 1957, a Golf 1 Karmann Cabriolet… the list goes on.
Social media played its role too. Through online communities, Sophie discovered new models, exchanged with fellow collectors, and slowly refined her vision of the cars she truly wanted to own.
From Europe to America
At first, Sophie’s interest leaned toward European classics — French and German models especially. But little by little, the idea of an American car began to grow.
She explored several options: a Chevrolet Impala ’61, a Pontiac Catalina ’53, a Chevrolet Corvair…
And then, inevitably, the Mustang appeared.
As she researched further, she noticed something else: Mustang values were steadily rising. She studied model years, body styles, engines — learning the car before even considering buying one.

Defining the Perfect Mustang
Sophie wanted a car with personality.
Something that would stand out. Something with character.
Her first dream was a 1965–66 Fastback, but prices quickly brought her back to reality. After missing two opportunities, she briefly turned to a more recent Volkswagen Beetle Convertible — before realizing she was only postponing the inevitable.
She wanted a Mustang.
Not just any Mustang, though.
That’s when she found it: a 1966 Mustang Coupe in Vintage Burgundy, built in a restomod spirit. Four-speed manual transmission. Rebuilt engine. Black interior in excellent condition.
And for long-time readers of Mustang Stories, this car was already familiar.
A Decisive Encounter with Kelly
When Sophie’s husband showed her the listing, she knew immediately.
This wasn’t just another Mustang.
It was Kelly — Sébastien’s former car.
Sophie called right away. The conversation with Sébastien flowed naturally. Trust was established. After a few discussions and a fair negotiation, an agreement was reached.
A few days later, Sophie knew: Kelly was coming home.
First Impressions, Mixed Emotions
On April 29, 2017, Sophie and her husband went to pick up the Mustang.
The emotion was real — but so were the imperfections.
The clutch felt heavy. The driving experience was demanding. Sophie stalled the car several times during her first attempts.
Still, one thing erased all doubts: the sound of the V8.
“Magnificent,” she said.

Driving It Home
Rather than transporting the car, Sophie chose to drive it back herself.
The journey was stressful. She wasn’t fully enjoying it yet. But the Mustang never missed a beat. Kelly made it home without issue — and Sophie arrived proud, relieved, and already attached.
A Mustang That Found Its Place
Since then, Sophie has made the car her own.
A new sound system was installed — perfect for listening to the Eagles or country music while cruising. Minor mechanical corrections were carried out. A few aesthetic adjustments refined the look. She’s also considering slightly raising the ride height, as the car sits low for modern roads filled with speed bumps.
Sophie drives her Mustang whenever she can: to work, to car meets, alternating with her beloved Peugeot 203.
At one event, a young girl told her that Kelly was her favorite car of all.
Moments like that strengthen the bond between owner and machine.
A Car Made for Her
In 2018, Sophie lives her passion fully behind the wheel of this 1966 Mustang Coupe Vintage Burgundy.
Rebellious through its modifications.
Charming through its lines.
Playful through its drivetrain.
Kelly didn’t just find a new owner.
She found the right one.
